Shadow Kisses Book Blog is excited to welcome Krystal McLaughlin, author of The Witches Lottery, book one in the Enchanted Island Series, for an author interview and eBook Giveaway to two lucky winners! Below is my review of the book and be sure to keep reading for your chance to snag this enchanted story every YA lover should read!
Title: The Witches Lottery
Author: Krystal McLaughlin
Genre(s): Paranormal, YA
Goodreads synopsis: When Sophia and Drew McKibben's parents are killed in a tragic car accident, they are shipped off to live with an aunt they never even knew existed. Believing that they are moving to a privately owned island just off of the coast of Mystic, CT to live alone with her, they are surprised to find a sort of under-aged bed and breakfast.
Sophia draws the attention of one of the locals, Falen, immediately. He always seems to know exactly what she is thinking, and to her frustration, everything she does seems to amuse him. When a newcomer to the island brings with him a sense of deja vu, she begins to ask herself the ultimate question: Am I going crazy?
Sophia's world starts to unravel when she notices her own brother acting just as abnormal as the rest of them. When she begins to realize that the life she left behind looks even more bizarre then the one she was forced to leave it for, she's faced with a decision to make: embrace the new life that has been given to her, or drown in the past. Either choice brings with it more secrets and deceptions to unearth. The problem now is that the two worlds may actually be more intertwined than she thought.
There is no part of this book that wasn’t enchanting and fun! With well-developed characters of different personalities and a beautiful and magical atmosphere you can’t go wrong. Young readers will fall in love with Sophia who makes you remember how it felt the first time a boy held your hand, or break your heart when she pulls you inside her head to experience the pain of dealing with her parent’s death. For a first novel, McLaughlin did a great job of putting together a cute and interesting story for paranormal YA readers. While this book would be even better with professional editing (and I have no doubt a publisher would be lucky to pick this book up) it was well worth the read and I hope many more get the chance to enjoy it!

1. Thank you for stopping by Shadow Kisses Book Blog! First off, how has your week been?
My week has been a whirlwind of activity. Halloween is my favorite time of year and I have had to prepare for it :)
2. Tell us about some of your most recent work?
Currently I am working on four different books. I know, yikes, but they are four very different books. The first one is the third book in my Enchanted Island series entitled The Goblin's Daughter, two other stand-alone paranormal young adult books entitled Guardian of the Realm: A Faerie Tale and Fire and Ice, and also a women's fiction book Lonely in Love.
3. Where do the ideas for your stories come from?
All sorts of places. I am usually pretty inspired. I can just be driving or walking and my mind sort of goes off into another place. I am not really sure how to explain it.
4. Have you ever had any paranormal experiences of your own?
I have had some pretty strange things happen that could be considered paranormal... I am a believer :)
5. What's the best part of being an author?
I would say that there is a certain pride and euphoria that happens when you create a character, a scene, or a story where everything just sort of fits together in the most satisfying of ways.
6. What's the worst?
Too many ideas and thoughts spinning out of control in my head making me have to sort through and decide which stay and which go.
7. What's a mistake you made that you wish you hadn't, but are glad you were able to learn from?
My marriage... Letting someone make me feel like I wasn't good enough. I have hope that life has something more in store for me.
8. How did the idea for the cover art come about?
The cover art was created by my best friend and I just sort of let her have free reign, I trusted her with her vision.
9. In your book, The Witches Lottery, each character has their own special powers. If you could pick, what would yours be?
I think that I would like to be a Leprechaun. I love the rain and it would be awesome to control when it happens.
10. Do you have any musical muses while writing your books?
So many different ones. Right now I am really into Lesley Roy, but it changes on a daily sometimes hourly basis.
11. Sophia always has very vivid dreams. Do you ever have crazy vivid dreams?
I definitely do. That's sort of where I got the inspiration for her visions...
12. What message from your books do you want to convey to your readers?
That no matter what your talents are, no matter what you find out about yourself, it's okay as long as you are true to yourself.
13. What is an interesting quirk you have?
I am terrified of orcas!
14. Who are your literary heroes?
JK Rowling, Nicholas Sparks, Stephanie Meyer, RL Stine, Christopher Pike, Johanna Lindsey, and Cassandra Clare. So many more, but these are my favorites :)
15. If you were stranded on an island like Sophia, and could only have three things with you, what would they be?
My computer, my daughter, and sun block.
16. In most young adult novels the characters fall in love right away. Do you believe in love at first sight?
I believe that when your heart senses someone that could potentially make you happy, it creates the illusion of love at first sight. I do however, fall hard and relatively fast into love, but it takes me a long time to fall out of it.
17. What is your next project?
There are so many. I will definitely finish The Enchanted Island Series by the end of 2012 with The Goblin's Daughter and The Magician's Intuition finishing it up. I have a series based on the lost city of Atlantis planned, and I am trying my hand at women's fiction.
18. Is there anything else you would like to let the readers know?
You can find me on twitter ~ @witcheslottery and also on my blog krystalmclaughlin.blogspot.com
