Hush, Hush Graphic Novel by Becca Fitzpatrick and Derek Ruiz

Authors: Becca Fitzpatrick and Derek Ruiz
Artist(s): Jennyson Rosero, David Pinos, Mel Joy San Juan
Genres: Graphic Novel, YA, Paranormal
Release Date: March 2012
My Rating:
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She''s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment. But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora''s not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can''t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel. For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life!

My take on the story: Nora and her best friend Vee are just normal high school teenagers in a small town. Vee is boy crazy and Nora is school crazy and takes her school work very seriously. So, when she gets partnered with Patch to do a school project, it drives her crazy when he doesn’t cooperate.

Patch is handsome and cocky and seems to have a secret….and Nora is going to find out what it is. Nora and Vee get the plan to look up Patch’s school records but they were empty….not even an immunization record.

One stormy night while Nora was driving, a dark figure runs in front of the car and attacks her. He breaks the window and tries to grab her, but Nora drives away. Later, when Vee and Nora go to look at the damage, the car is fine….like nothing ever happened. Nora feels like she is going crazy but can’t get the dark figure out of her head. Is Patch stalking her?

When Nora confronts Patch and still learns nothing, she swears to find his secret.
To be continued….

The Story and Content: This first issue of the Hush, Hush graphic novel only covers the first few chapters of the book, before anything very interesting starts to happen, so it is more of a background builder. We get to know Nora, where she lives, that her father was murdered, and that her mother is barely ever home.
Most of the conversations were between Nora and Vee so we don’t get the juicy stuff with Nora and Patch yet.

Compared to the Book: Follows the book to the T!

The Art: *Swoon* The art in this issue is amazing. Every page is detailed and beautiful even without color! Nora is beautiful and Vee is just like I imagined her, right down to her oversized chest. I was hoping Patch would have been drawn a little different but overall he is very swoon worthy.
I feel like the lack of color gives the artist more chance to add detail and I certainly think they took advantage of it.
