The majority of comics that I have read were the Archie Issues I would talk my mom into buying me when we went to the grocery store, so when I got the chance to review a real graphic novel I was ecstatic!
Even if you are not a fan of Mead’s books you will enjoy this paranormal romance brought to life before your eyes!
My Take on the Story: (Backup Story) Eugenie is a strong shaman and when she is on a job, the spirit seems to know who she is….her real name, and even tries to get in her pants (that had never happened before).
Eug is offered a job to save Jasmine, a teenage girl who was kidnapped by Gentry (Fairies) more specifically, Aeson, King of the Alder Land. But the job requires Eugenie to cross over into the otherworld, and that can be very dangerous.
Eug struggles with what to do, and decides to get her mind off things and clear her head over a drink where she meets Kiyo, a sexy and charming man who strikes up a conversation with her.
When Egu goes home with Kiyo she didn’t expect to have the best and care free *love making* of her life, and she definitely didn’t expect for another demon to show up….
(Issue Two) The Gentry that manifested was an Ice Elemental, an anthro-morphic creature composed of sharp ice crystals. Right away Kiyo jumped into action, faster than any regular human could do. Once again this spirit wanted to get into Eug’s pants and knew her name. After sending him back to the otherworld, Eug went on the defensive and frantically tried to figure out what Kiyo really was. He jumped out the window and disappeared! (That was strange).
While Eug uses her contacts to find any information on Kiyo she made up her mind to save Jasmine….now she just has to tell her family.
(Issue Three) After telling her mother and step-dad her plan, Eugenie works on summoning some extra help for the job. She calls upon Volusian, a damned soul who Eug enslaved when she caught him tormenting a family, Nandi, a Zulu who Eug had offered eventual peace in exchange for service to her for three years, and Finn, who just hung around for entertainment.
Eugenie and her gang went in search of Aeson but were attacked by King Dorian’s army on the way. King Dorian is king of the Oak Land and isn’t a big fan of Aeson, so he makes a deal with Eugenie to help her take Aeson down. He offers an ex guard of Aeson’s, who has an expert knowledge of his castle’s layout.
Once Eug and the gang get inside the castle and fight off the first swarm of guards, they find Jasmine…..but they also find King Aeson himself!
(Issue Four) Aeson's guard had a hold on Eugenie while Aeson told her his plans…to beget the Heir. It turns out Eug’s father is the Storm King, an evil Gentry who aimed to take over the human world. He had kidnapped her mother and raped her until Roland (Eug’s step-father) rescued them and brought them back to the Human world. Eventually the Storm King came looking for Eug and Roland Killed him.
Now, there is a prophecy going around the otherworld that the Strom Kings vision will be carried out through his daughter’s son, and every Gentry wants it to be their heir that makes it happen.
Kiyo comes to Eug’s rescue and helps her escape back to her world where she learns he marked her so that he could follow her and he also has the ability to turn into a fox.
When Eug’s mother comes to apologize for keeping the secret of her real father from her for so many years, they are attacked by spirits who claim to harm her mother if she does not let the Gentry with them have his way with her.
Before Eugenie knows what she is doing the winds pick up inside the house and thunder roars around her….then the lights go out..
To be continued…
The Story and Content: Wow, how many shockers can they pack into one comic? This issue was action packed and full of surprises! We finally get to hear the prophecy that has been going around the otherworld and who Eug’s real father is.
Eug has some real conflicts to deal with in this issue and she struggles with the fact that she is part Gentry….the thing she hates and destroys on a daily bases.
Kiyo shows up again to show off his sweet side and any woman would start to fall for him….even as a cartoon he is a hunk :)
The Art: My favorite scene in this issue was when Eug is getting attacked by the spirits. The artist showed so many different angels during the fight that you really get into the action!
The color was my favorite part about the graphic novel. The colors really popped, and brought the whole story to another dimension!
