An Unbreakable Love side story by Angela Carling

Clarissa stood outside Nate’s apartment. She pulled the button sized digital recorder from her pocket and turned it on before dropping back into her coat pocket. Before she knocked on his faded red apartment door, she spoke aloud to get her thoughts on tape. “I’m at the home of Nate Everett, a recently reassigned Guardian Angel. He does not know I’m coming and today we will find out what happened to make him lose his prestigious position as Guardian and what happened to his infamous Supervisor Celeste Horn.

Clarissa, knocked on the door, her large rings making a clacking sound as they hit the weathered wood. Unaware of her intentions, Nate opened the door and was greeted by Clarissa’s professional smile.

“Hi, I’m Clarissa Right a reporter from the Heavenly Herald and I wondered if you had a few minutes so that we could talk.” As she spoke, she extended her delicate hand to him in an offer to shake hands.

Graciously, Nate shook her hand and invited her into his apartment. Once inside, she made herself at home on the well-worn beige couch facing the small kitchen area. Nate sat across from her in an oversized armchair that had once been plush and cushiony but now was flat and lumpy.

“How can I help you?” he asked as he pushed Jenny out of his mind just as he did a hundred times a day.

“I understand that you just returned from a very important assignment, one involving a young girl destined to be the president of the United States?” Clarissa said this more as a statement than a question.

Nate continued to smile, but was wondering how a reporter got a hold of information that was supposed to be confidential.

“Yes, I did,” he answered cautiously.

“And is it true that the famous Celeste Horn was your supervisor for your previous job?” She asked.

“Yes,” Nate answered wondering at the same time, what other privy information this woman might have in her back pocket.

Clarissa pushed on. She needed this story. Without it, he boss had made it clear that there would be one less reporter working for the Herald, and it would be her.

“And is it true that because of what happened on earth, you have been fired and are no longer with the highly coveted Guardian Angel forces?”

As soon as Clarissa spoke, she knew she’d pushed too hard, too fast but the words were already out.
Nate bristled in his chair and his eyes hardened as he matched her steady gaze. “What is this about?” Nate asked her.

Clarissa had to think quick. She grabbed the first idea to come to her mind. “It’s about you Nate. I’m writing an article about your heroic efforts to help those poor people on earth. The first woman president on earth, that’s no small thing” She said.

“Well, actually the mission was about her sister, Jennie” Nate said and as soon as his words slipped out he realized he may have given her new information.

By then, Clarissa had pulled out her warmest most reassuring smile, but Nate was still tentative.

“Don’t be so modest” she gushed, “They don’t give important missions like that to everyone. There must be some special reason you were chosen….and then to be let go. You must have quite a story to tell.”

Nate allowed himself to think about Jennie, just for a minute. He could see her in his mind’s eye, the way her soft dark curls framed her face, the way her green eyes lit up when she got excited. That familiar ache kicked in as he thought about her so far away on earth, without him. Nate winced from the emptiness and Clarissa leaned in sensing that Nate might finally spill his personal feelings. She was about to be disappointed.

Nate straightened his back and swallowed before he spoke as if that might keep his forbidden words down.

His tactic seemed to work and he was able to choose his next words carefully.

“No, he said, “There is nothing special about me or my abilities. I was just an angel doing my job.”

“Have you thought about Jenny since you returned home?” Clarissa asked.

“No,” Nate said cringing at his own lie.

Clarissa was getting antsy. Getting information from Nate was going to be more difficult than she thought.

“What about Celeste,” she said, “I’ve heard she is the toughest supervisor out there. Is that true? Did you get along with her?”

A small smile tugged on Nate’s lips. He couldn’t help it as he thought about how he both loved and was terrified of Celeste at the same time.

“She was strict, but good.” Nate responded purposely keeping his answer vague. There was no way he would ever tell this stranger all he went through with Celeste, not to mention all the money he spent on sweets for her.

Clarissa folded her hands in her lap and took a deep irritated breath. “You’re not going to help me, are you?” she said to Nate.

Nate’s shoulders slumped and he looked down at the ground. “It’s not that I don’t want to help you,” he said before he let his eyes rise to meet her inquisitive gaze. “It’s just that you are asking me to divulge important things, things that are private and personal and between me and people I care about.” Nate reached across the couch and put one hand gently over Clarissa’s hand. “I’m sorry,” he said, “Some things are too personal to splash across the page of newspaper. Some things are meant to remain between you, the people involved, and the boss.”

Clarissa hung her head in defeat. She was wasting her time and they both knew it. “Well, then it is time for me to go.” Clarissa said as she stood up taking her hand back from beneath Nate’s. Neither spoke as they walked to the door and Nate opened it for her. Clarissa stepped out into the white cloudless day and turned to Nate.

“You know I still have to write this article,” she warned him.

Nate smiled as he stood there noticing how small and fragile she looked on his doorstep. “Good luck,” he offered, neither approving nor disapproving her last words. Just before Clarissa stepped off his porch she thought, “At least he opened the door. All I got from Celeste was a door slammed in my face.” She took out her recorder and looked at it for a second thinking about its meager contents. Now came the hard part, writing a scathing article with little or no information.
